Medical professionals look to combat pain pill abuse

governor susana martinez is looking for ways to regulate pain killers. meanwhile– one local doctor is working with the medical board to come up with solutions. cristina rodda explains how that doctor has alreadyelped at least one man overcome his addiction. scott tuning is a family man– he’s also a former prescription drug addict. “i think it is hard to descre how that medicine makes you feel but it takes away the negative impacts of almost anything that is going on in life.” last year — he took vicoden for a broken collar bone– 6 months later he was in the hospital for a probable snake bite. some of his fingertips were amputated– and he was back on pain killers- including oxycodone. he knew he was hooked. when the pills ran out he’d go to the doctor and get more. “you have to think about who you are going to see and what you are going to say.” at presbytarian’s emergency room dr. mark sagarian — nat: pills prescribes opioid pain killers for ings like broken bones and abdominal pain. but some er patients are just there for the next high. most extreme example i’ve seen is somebody who would actually use a nail gun to put a nail into his hand to try and trick doctors into giving him more medicine. therapy is an answer. “this is very treatable. ” dr. steven jenkusay runs presbyterian’s therapy program.. he’s working with the medical board but he also worked with scott tuning. “there a some folks that are genetically predisposed. he says medication is used to help with
